Meet Josh Wootonn, the creator of Type the Word.
He emailed me (Cam Pak, of faith.tools) in December about us hoping on a call to meet and share stories, because we both loved faith and tech. We’ve called a couple of times now, and every time it feels like we’re brothers and I’m always encouraged to live out my God-given calling.
I believe Josh’s ability to create beautiful technology is because of his overflowing heart for God and His people.
What is the story of Type the Word? How did it come to be?
A couple of years ago, I typed out Psalms 1 to 137 over a 6 month period. Not only did this improve my typing, but it also encouraged me daily. When I later discovered monkeytype.com, it made sense to combine the two concepts of typing practice tool specifically for the Bible.
Typing the Bible makes you look at every word and see the passage anew.
When I was developing this site, I used John 11:35 as the edge case since its the shortest verse in the Bible. Typing it over and over made me realize that Jesus wept because he loved Lazarus. He died for us because he loves us with the same love.
What's one challenge that you overcame? Or, when it felt like quitting, what helped you stay the course?
Leading up to releasing Type the Word I faced a lot of spiritual warfare and anxiety. I had never planned on Christianity being part of my personal brand. Creating Type the Word has been a journey in realizing that I want to be branded as a Christian. It's so fundamental to who I am and I can't be authentic while excluding that information about myself. This is great though. I want to represent Christ and I'm happy that God given me even a small way of doing that.
Anywhere you recognize God's hand throughout the journey?
God has blessed the marketing of Type the Word and many people have found it despite my marketing and SEO skills. Here is a quote from a user that found Type the Word last January has typed through the Bible in 2024. "I've struggled every year reading the bible, and I couldn't finish reading the whole bible. It had been my unfulfilled resolution of every year. However, this app helped me finish the bible."
If you could give advice to someone who's wanting to build an app or tool for Christians, what advice would you give?
